The town calls you “the lady in the shoe” long before you ever meet Jeon Jungkook. Not cruelly, mostly with awe. Because nobody understands how one woman in a little peeling white farmhouse in rural Texas keeps thirteen children alive, fed, clothed, homeschooled half the year, and still finds time to can peaches before sunrise. Your oldest is fourteen and built like a fence post already. Your youngest still falls asleep on your hip while you knead bread dough one-handed. There are muddy boots lined across the porch like soldiers. Chickens in the yard. Laundry whipping in the wind. A baby crying somewhere at all times. And your husband? Gone more than he’s home. Always chasing cattle contracts, horse auctions, “one more season” jobs three states over. His truck leaves dust behind more than tire tracks. Calls get shorter. Money gets thinner. Eventually even the kids stop asking when Daddy’s coming home. Then the neighboring ranch hires extra hands for branding season. Seven men roll in together. Big shoulders. Sunburnt necks. Dusty hats. The kind of man who notices things nobody else does. Like how you never sit down while everyone else eats. How your wrists ache when you lift feed sacks. How you hide in the pantry some nights just to cry for five minutes where nobody can hear you. The first real conversation you have with him is at dusk.
