"On the Road to Nowhere"
Part 1
Fay took her final bow at The Red Lion pub, her guitar slung over her shoulder as she smiled to the cheering crowd. It was a regular gig for her, but she loved the intimate setting and the chance to connect with her local fans. After the show, she packed up her gear and said goodbye to the owner, who had become a friend over the years. With her instruments loaded into the back of her car, Fay set off for her agency building to discuss her upcoming schedule. The meeting with her manager, Rachel, was not what Fay had hoped for. Rachel was a no-nonsense woman who always put the needs of the industry first. "So, you're planning on taking a summer vacation, huh?" Rachel asked, raising an eyebrow. "To your Aunt's hometown, I presume?" Fay nodded, feeling a bit defensive. "Yeah, I need a break. I've been working non-stop for months." Rachel sighed. "Fay, you need to be more involved in the industry world. You're not just a local musician, you're a rising star. You need to be seen at the right events, networking with the right people. This vacation of yours is not exactly ideal timing." Fay felt a surge of frustration, but she knew better than to argue with Rachel. "I'll make it up, I promise. I'll be more involved after I get back." Rachel nodded, seeming to accept Fay's promise. "Good. Now, let's discuss your upcoming shows..." Fay tuned out, her mind already on the long drive ahead of her. She was supposed to meet her father at his office to pick her up, and she wasn't exactly looking forward to it. Her father, a high-powered businessman, was always busy and rarely had time for her. She often felt like an afterthought to him. As she pulled up to his office, Fay spotted him standing outside, chatting with a colleague. He barely noticed her arrival, and Fay felt a pang of disappointment. They exchanged a brief hello before he got into the car, apologizing for being late. The conversation was stilted at first, with Fay's father asking about her music and her plans for the future. But as the minutes ticked by, Fay found herself getting frustrated with his lack of interest. He seemed more concerned with his work and his colleague's family than with her. The conversation turned heated, with Fay expressing her feelings of neglect and her father defending himself. Fay felt tears pricking at the corners of her eyes, but she refused to cry. Instead, she put on her headphones and turned up the music, listening to some new beats that her producer had sent her. The familiar rhythms and melodies calmed her down, and she eventually drifted off to sleep. The rest of the eleven-hour drive was a blur, with Fay sleeping fitfully and waking up occasionally to stretch. When she finally arrived at her grandfather's hometown, she felt refreshed and ready to relax. As she pulled up to her grandfather's house, Fay was greeted by the familiar sight of the old Victorian home and the cheerful face of her grandfather, Lolo. He was a kind and gentle man, with a quick wit and a love of music. Fay had always felt a deep connection to him, and she was glad to be spending time with him. Lolo welcomed her with a warm hug and a joke, and Fay felt a sense of peace wash over her. They spent the evening catching up and laughing together, and Fay felt like she was finally home. The next day, Lolo told her about the Town's Annual Fair, which was happening in two days. "You should perform, kiddo," he said, his eyes twinkling. "The same act has been performing for years, and the people are getting tired of it. You'd be a breath of fresh air." Fay was hesitant at first, but Lolo's enthusiasm was infectious. She agreed to perform, and Lolo immediately contacted the Town's Board to make it happen. The announcement was made the next morning, and it caused a stir in the town. Fay spent the day rehearsing with a local band, and she met Jun, the drummer. They immediately connected over their shared love of music, and Fay felt like she had found a kindred spirit. That night, Fay took the stage at the fair, her heart pounding with excitement. She performed with all her heart, and the crowd loved her. But as she was leaving the stage, a sudden rainstorm swept in, catching her off guard. As she rushed to grab her things, Fay was knocked over by someone rushing by. Avi helped her to her feet, and they huddled together under a storefront tent. Fay was uncomfortable with Avi's intense gaze, and she told him so. But he just laughed and complimented her on her performance. As the rain slowed to a drizzle, Avi offered her a ride home, but Fay declined. As she walked away, Avi teased her about forgetting her bag, which he was holding. Fay came back to grab it, and Avi stopped her one last time to tell her that she was really cute. Fay blushed and nodded, feeling a flutter in her chest. And as she walked away into the night, Fay couldn't help but wonder what the rest of her summer would bring.
