The Price of Control
Part 7
Zelda's voice was laced with desperation as she continued her argument with Victoria. "You can't just lock Link away and expect him to be okay. You've essentially sentenced him to touch deprivation. Do you have any idea what that does to Hylians?" Victoria raised an eyebrow, her fascination with Zelda's words evident. "I'm afraid I don't. Please, do tell." Zelda's expression turned grave. "Touch deprivation can lead to depression, anxiety, and a weakened immune system. It can also cause hallucinations, disorientation, and even psychosis in extreme cases. And it's not just Hylians who are affected. The Gorons, for example, can develop a condition known as 'Goron's Grief' when they're deprived of physical contact. It's a debilitating illness that can cause them to become withdrawn and isolated." Victoria's eyes sparkled with interest. "I've never heard of that before. And what about the other races in your kingdom? How do they fare with touch deprivation?" Zelda's voice took on a sorrowful tone. "The Zora can develop a condition known as 'River's Chill', which causes their body temperature to drop to dangerously low levels. The Kokiri can become listless and lethargic, losing their connection to nature and the world around them. And the Gerudo... well, they're not exactly known for their affectionate nature, but even they can become irritable and aggressive when deprived of physical contact." Victoria leaned forward, her eyes shining with excitement. "Fascinating. I had no idea that touch deprivation could have such far-reaching consequences. But tell me, Zelda, what's the difference between your branch of the Hylian kingdom and Link's? I understand that there are subtle differences between the two." Zelda nodded, her expression serious. "Yes, there are. While we share a common heritage, there are distinct differences between the Hylians of the royal bloodline and those of the... more common branch, if you will. The royal bloodline, to which I belong, has a more... refined physiology, shall we say. We're more attuned to the magical energies that flow through the kingdom, and our bodies are better equipped to handle the stresses of ruling." Victoria's gaze was intense. "And Link? Where does he fit in?" Zelda's voice was barely above a whisper. "Link is a member of the common branch of the Hylian kingdom. His physiology is... different from mine, and his connection to the Triforce of Courage makes him even more unique. When he's deprived of physical contact, his body reacts in ways that are... unpredictable. The toxic tears, for example, are a manifestation of his body's stress response." Victoria's smile grew wider. "Ah, I see. And you believe that by locking him away, I'm putting him at risk of developing these... conditions?" Zelda's eyes pleaded with Victoria to understand. "I'm not just talking about his physical health, Victoria. I'm talking about his emotional well-being. Hylians need physical contact to feel connected, to feel loved and accepted. Without it, they can become isolated and withdrawn. And Link... Link is already struggling with the weight of his responsibilities as the Hero of Hyrule. Depriving him of touch is only going to make things worse." Victoria leaned back in her chair, a thoughtful expression on her face. "I must admit, Zelda, I'm intrigued by your words. Perhaps I should reconsider my approach. But for now, I think we'll stick to our original plan. I'm sure Link will adjust to his new... living arrangements."
