A Skeletal Encounter: Sans and Undyne's Tale of Frustration and Friendship
Prompt: (Sans: Profile Appearance Sans appears as a relatively short and paunchy skeleton, with mitten-like hands. Sans is always seen with a wide, toothy-grin on his face. Sans wears a blue hoodie with a gray hood, a white t-shirt underneath, black shorts with white stripes, and a pair of slippers. He has white dots for pupils in his black eye sockets that disappear when he is serious or angered. When Sans uses telekinesis whilst fighting you, his left eye flashes light blue and yellow (the colors for patience and justice) while his right pupil vanishes. Personality Sans is lazy, often sleeping on the job and taking breaks. His laziness is a combination of fatalism and apathy, as he is aware of timeline resets. Conversely, he suggests that this knowledge could be "a poor excuse for being lazy."[3] Waterfall location Sans telescope Sans's fake telescope. He enjoys being mischievous. Sans primarily acts this way towards those he is in good terms with. His antics range from an assortment of illogical, juvenile, and slightly inconvenient pranks. Examples include Sans "selling fried snow," using whoopee cushions, sharing an unscrewed ketchup bottle, and eye paint on a telescope. He is not above utilizing his teleportation or other magic for practical jokes either.[4] Sans is also fond of making the occasional low-brow puns. He enjoys making others laugh in general, as he also performs at MTT Resort as a comedian.[5][6] Despite Sans being apathetic towards his own life, he is considerate to those he cares for. For example, Sans is a regular at Grillby's, and the monsters and Royal Guard dogs treat him kindly. Sans has informed Big Mouth about "all kinds of incredible foods," yet Big Mouth comments that "he always orders the worst burger off the menu." Although Sans hates making promises, he respects Toriel's request to watch out for any humans.[7] Even if the protagonist killed people that were close to him, Sans refrains from broaching the topic until the Last Corridor. In a Neutral Route ending where Papyrus or Toriel are alive, Sans omits the protagonist's slaughter to either of them. He is also observant; Sans reads the protagonist's expressions and can often tell when they have already done certain tasks, as when SAVING and reloading. Though Sans is usually agreeable, he can become eerily serious to emphasize a subject. Regardless of the human being partially or wholly merciful, Sans tells them that if "the old lady" (confirmed in the True Pacifist Route to be Toriel) had not made him promise to protect them, "(they'd) be dead where (they) stand." In the True Pacifist Route Sans says that he's joking, but during the Genocide Route, he does everything in his power to kill the protagonist, even faking mercy. Sans may have a scientific background. Evidence includes the quantum physics book, his workshop, affinity for science,[8] his inexplicable ability to teleport and his timeline research.[9] Sans has implied he once longed and searched for a life that he cannot go back to as he "gave up trying to go back a long time ago". As a Lost Soul during the battle with Asriel Dreemurr, he tells the protagonist that "you'll never see 'em again." However, as Sans' statements in this case are vague and nonspecific, it is currently unknown what he refers to at all. ADVERTISEMENT Main Story Neutral Route heheh... the old whoopee cushion in the hand trick. It’s ALWAYS funny. SANS Sans screenshot stalking Sans's first appearance in Snowdin Forest. Sans introduces himself to the protagonist in Snowdin Forest after he initially appears as a silhouette. He explains that he has no interest in capturing humans, but that his brother, Papyrus, does.[10] Then, Sans hides the protagonist behind a lamp whose shape is very conveniently identical to the protagonist's. Papyrus rushes to Sans, and the brothers discuss Sans's laziness and the importance of puzzle upkeep.[11][12] Sans appears multiple times throughout Snowdin Forest, observing and commentating on the puzzles but not engaging in any japery, except for the word search. Before Papyrus's battle, Sans is absent in Snowdin Town. He appears briefly to play trombone during the date/hangout with Papyrus but does not appear again until the Last Corridor if the protagonist kills Papyrus. Premoniton soundtrack A spotlight falls on the protagonist and Sans as "Premonition" plays. After entering Waterfall, Sans is found manning a sentry station and asks the protagonist if they want to take a break with him. If the protagonist agrees, he takes them to Grillby's via a "shortcut." The patrons warmly greet Sans, and he proceeds to treat the protagonist to a burger or fries. After some dialogue, a spotlight falls on him and the protagonist and time appears to stop as Sans tells the protagonist that a flower has been talking to Papyrus.[13] Sans believes that someone is tricking Papyrus with an Echo Flower. However, the flower in question is Flowey.[14] Sans can be seen again in Waterfall and pranks the protagonist with a red-eye telescope. Later, if Papyrus was killed, "a hooded figure" watches Shyren's battle. However, if Papyrus was spared, Sans sells concert tickets made of toilet paper, implying the hooded figure was Sans as well. Sans screenshot head dogs Sans telling the protagonist the limit of head dogs. The protagonist passes him sleeping at a sentry post in Hotland if the protagonist flees from Undyne. Undyne notices him sleeping and berates him mid-chase. Sans does not appear in this spot if Undyne was killed, even if Papyrus was spared. Later, Sans sells Hot Dogs in Hotland for 30G. If the protagonist attempts to buy a Hot Dog when their inventory is full, he stacks a maximum of 30 Hot Dogs on their head for free.[15] It's Raining Somewhere Else soundtrack Sans and the protagonist at the MTT Resort's restaurant as "It's Raining Somewhere Else" plays. Further on, Sans waits outside of the MTT Resort and asks the protagonist if they want to grab a bite to eat. He escorts the protagonist inside via "shortcut" and talks about a woman he has befriended that shares his affinity for puns.[16][17]. He tells the protagonist that this woman (implied, and later confirmed to be Toriel) made him promise to protect any human that left the Ruins and that, if she had not said anything, the protagonist would be "dead where [they] stand." He dismisses this as a joke immediately and says that he has done a great job protecting the protagonist. If the protagonist has not died before, Sans takes credit for their success. If the protagonist has died, Sans questions the validity of his statement.[18][19] Before leaving, he tells the protagonist to take care of themself because someone really cares about them. Judgement So you finally made it. The end of your journey is at hand. In a few moments, you will meet the king. Together... You will determine the future of this world. SANS'S INTRODUCTION IN THE LAST CORRIDOR. The protagonist encounters Sans for the last time in the Last Corridor. He explains that EXP and LOVE are acronyms - "EXecution Points" and "Level Of ViolencE"[20] and judges the protagonist for their current EXP.[21] If the protagonist gained no EXP, Sans skips his judgment, instead praising the protagonist for embracing compassion and actively choosing to be merciful to the monsters throughout their journey. He reinforces the idea that the protagonist's actions shall decide the fate of the world in one of two ways: the protagonist lets Asgore take their SOUL and allow the monsters to break the Barrier, or they take Asgore's SOUL to escape the Barrier themself.[22] Impressed by their feat, Sans concludes that the protagonist now has enough determination and believes that they can do the right thing before leaving.[23] Papyrus and Sans's House location workshop Sans's workshop entrance is located behind his house. If the protagonist has heard his speech before, Sans notices their bored expression and offers a secret codeword that he uses to prove that they are a time traveler.[24] After the protagonist loads their SAVE a few times, Sans's suspicions are affirmed and he gives them a key to his room.[25] Inside Sans's room is a key to his workshop. If the protagonist gained EXP, Sans allows them a moment to think about their actions. He then emphasizes the importance of integrity and, if Papyrus is alive, concludes that whatever happens next is up to the protagonist.[26] If the protagonist killed Papyrus, Sans expresses his suspicion that they have some special power. He then asks if the protagonist thinks it is their responsibility to do the right thing.[27] Regardless of their answer, Sans reminds the protagonist of his fallen brother and leaves. If the protagonist returns to the Last Corridor after loading a SAVE, Sans judges the protagonist on their earned LV. Subsequent attempts to talk to Sans after judgment prompts him to tell the protagonist to "consider [their] session over." Sans's judgment occurs after he re-explains LOVE and EXP, and after he tells the protagonist to look inside themself. (Before Judgment) huh? you look bored. i get the feeling you aren't gonna learn anything from this. well, guess I gotta judge you then. (Failsafe text; can occur if the protagonist is at LV 1 with EXP but has previously been judged at a higher level.) come on. really? (One LV higher than the previous judgment, or LV 1 with EXP if it is their first.) ... huh? what's with that look in your eye? did you go through and kill someone... just to see what i'd say about it? wow. you're a pretty gross person, huh? (LV 2) lv2... seems like you messed up the slightest amount. welp. that's pretty sad. you probably weren't even aware of what you were doing... and when you learned, it was too late. nah, just kidding. who gets to lv2 on accident? get outta here. (LV 3) lv3... 3's just an ok number, i guess. i'll give you a C+. you can do better, right? (LV 4 – LV 9) hmmm... over lv3, huh. you killed some people on purpose, didn't you? that's probably bad. though, maybe some of it was in self-defense... i don't know. help me out here. i wasn't watching. anyways, don't do that. (LV 10 – LV 14) hmmm... over lv9, huh. that's over halfway to lv20, the maximum. but don't think that means you're still 50-percent good. 50-percent, 20-percent. those are both still failing grades. besides. chances are... i've already tried to steer you in the right direction. so what can i say? what can i say that will change the mind of a being like you...? (LV 15 and Above) hmmm... over lv14, huh. well, hmmm... judgment-wise... you're a pretty bad person. you wander around, looking for people... killing them to take their money. that's just plain messed up. and what's worse, is that as bad as you are... you aren't anywhere near as bad as you could be. you pretty much suck at being evil. honestly, it's super embarrassing. but maybe you'd be better... at not killing anyone? crazy idea, huh? let me know how that one goes. SANS'S LV JUDGMENT Endings An Ending soundtrack After the protagonist defeats Photoshop Flowey, Sans calls and informs them of the events that transpired after their departure. The content of this phone call varies depending on the protagonist's actions. True Pacifist Route huh? you haven't beaten this guy yet? come on, this weirdo's got nothin' on you. SANS Flowey screenshot captured monsters Sans and other main characters trapped by Flowey's vines. After resetting, Sans is absent from the Last Corridor in the True Pacifist Route. However, he does appear during the pre-Asriel cutscene and meets Toriel face-to-face for the first time. Flowey binds Sans and the protagonist's other friends, then eventually absorbs their SOULs after they defend the protagonist from Flowey. During the battle against Asriel, Sans appears as one of the Lost Souls alongside Papyrus. Epilogue After defeating Asriel, Sans stands alongside the other main characters. If the protagonist talks to him, he says a certain remark depending on what, if anything, the protagonist said to Toriel in calls at the beginning of the game.[28] Sans also uses Toriel's phone to text for her a few times because Toriel's thumbs are too big for the phone buttons. When the protagonist is ready to leave, Sans exits the Underground and heads to the Surface along with the other monsters. When Papyrus runs off to introduce himself to the humans, Sans says that someone must keep him away from trouble and runs off in the opposite direction, presumably to use a "shortcut." Sans overworld tricycle In the credits, Sans rides a tricycle on a highway and overtakes Papyrus's sports car, much to his brother's annoyance. Genocide Route if you keep going the way you are now... ... you're gonna have a bad time. SANS'S WARNING TO THE PROTAGONIST IN A GENOCIDE ROUTE Sans screenshot bad time Sans disappears in front of the protagonist. Sans stalks and introduces himself to the protagonist as usual but requests that they continue pretending to be a human.[29] He does not comment on the protagonist turning around before he asks them to. Sans goes along with Papyrus's japery and does not appear as an NPC as he does on other routes. After the protagonist crosses the bridge before Snowdin Town, Sans warns them not to fight his brother or else they will "have a bad time." He then disappears and is absent until the Last Corridor. If the protagonist aborts the Genocide Route by sparing Papyrus, Sans reappears at the Waterfall sentry station and expresses his respect for their mercy to Papyrus.[30] He continues to appear as he does on the Neutral Route but does not take the protagonist to Grillby's since Snowdin has been evacuated. Sans screenshot before battle Sans's Last Corridor speech in the Genocide Route. After killing Papyrus, the protagonist continues to kill all the monsters in the Underground. Sans watches them secretly without confronting them directly, hoping they would heed his friendly advice and stop. Eventually, he decides to stop them himself no matter what. Sans confronts the protagonist in the Last Corridor but does not judge, instead claiming they must have been busy. He starts off by paraphrasing one of Papyrus' statements. Instead of answering, the protagonist takes a step forward. Next Sans laughs and asks "do you wanna have a bad time?", threatening them with force should they proceed. When the protagonist dismisses his warnings and continue to advance, he fights them. Before the battle begins, Sans apologizes to the late Toriel for breaking his promise to her. MEGALOVANIA soundtrack Battle against Sans. Sans repeatedly dodges the protagonist's attempts to hit him and retaliates with his relentless attacks, doing his best to stop them. When he approaches exhaustion, he decides to stall forever by doing nothing, and refuses to let the protagonist have their turn, hoping they will eventually quit of boredom. Sans however falls asleep, giving the protagonist a window of opportunity without his interference. When they manage to attack again, Sans dodges once more, but fails to avoid the second, and takes a whopping 9999999 damage. Recognizing his failure, Sans makes one desperate attempt to deter the protagonist, and slowly walks out of the screen while joking that he is going to Grillby's. He then speaks to his dead brother, asking him if he wants anything, and disintegrates shortly after. For further information, see Sans/In Battle. After Killing Sans, the protagonist's EXP is set to 99999, and their LV reaches 20. Sans will make certain remarks if he notices the protagonist has defeated him before and is fighting him again by resetting or through loading a SAVE.[31] ADVERTISEMENT In Battle For an in-battle description, see Sans/In Battle. Relationships The Protagonist take care of yourself, kid. 'cause someone really cares about you. SANS AFTER HIS RENDEZVOUS AT THE MTT RESORT Sans's attitude towards the protagonist depends on their actions, though he usually enjoys pranking them and occasionally hanging out with them unless they kill Papyrus. Near the end of a Neutral or Genocide Route, he judges them on their EXP. At the end of the True Pacifist Route, Sans considers them a good friend. If the protagonist killed Papyrus, Sans does not bother to encounter them until he judges them in the Last Corridor, where he reminds them that they killed his brother. Sans initially considers the protagonist to be an "anomaly"; his intentions of befriending them were in hopes that they would stop resetting the timeline.[32] However, he also says that the protagonist did not die after their initial encounter because of his promise to Toriel. This may imply he would have killed the protagonist, he protected them from life-threatening harm after their first encounter, or he was simply joking. His awareness of time travel makes him scrupulous, and he recognizes when the protagonist is behaving unusually. Sans reads the protagonist's expression and determines if they have experienced events before and are repeating them.[33] He also knows how much EXP the protagonist has and comments on it when judging them. If the protagonist pursues pacifism, Sans begins to lose his previous apathy and comes to genuinely support the protagonist in their mission, as indicated in his MTT Resort date[34] and Last Corridor judgement.[35] Papyrus here, i'll give you some advice about fighting my brother. don't. capiche? SANS IF THE PROTAGONIST IS ABOUT TO FIGHT PAPYRUS AFTER HAVING PREVIOUSLY KILLED HIM Sans deeply cares for and admires his brother. He keeps up with Papyrus's temper tantrums and he knows how to deal with Papyrus's childish outbursts. Sans also reads him bedtime stories[36] and gives him presents under the identity of Santa.[37] Nonetheless, Sans likes to mess with Papyrus, sending him bad puns on the UnderNet.[38] He also leaves a dirty sock in their living room for Papyrus to fuss over. Sans also worries about others hurting Papyrus or taking advantage of him. In the Papyrus ending of the Neutral Route, Papyrus states that Sans is handling the paperwork and puts in unusual amounts of effort compared to his usual lethargy. To avoid bothering Papyrus with other characters' deaths, Sans lies about them going on a vacation.[39] He also conceals this to Papyrus in other Neutral Route endings where the latter is alive. Toriel oh hey... i recognize your voice, too. SANS AFTER MEETING TORIEL IN PERSON FOR THE FIRST TIME. Toriel and Sans share a love of bad jokes and are friends even though they never see each other face-to-face until the epilogue, the Family Ending, or the Exiled Queen Ending. Before the protagonist's arrival, Sans and Toriel shared jokes through the door to the Ruins. In the Exiled Queen Ending, Sans becomes Toriel's roommate if Papyrus has been killed. In this route, he does not inform Toriel of the protagonist's slaughter to uphold his promise. If Papyrus is alive, the brothers visit Toriel often, play board games together, and sometimes convince Toriel to leave the Ruins. As mentioned before, while not being one to make promises, Sans complies with Toriel's request to watch over and protect any human that exits the Ruins. Near the end of the Genocide Route, he indirectly apologizes to her, as he is forced to break his promise to stop the protagonist.[40] Sans and Toriel are only seen together on screen in the True Pacifist Ending. If the protagonist decides to go back through the Underground before going to the surface, Sans sends them texts for Toriel since her thumbs are too big for the buttons on the phone. It is implied that they soon fight for control of the phone when they begin to send embarrassing texts of each other. Alphys It is implied Sans is friends with Alphys, as he sends her dog food to help her feed Endogeny.[41] However, he does not inform anyone of his actions. Their friendship is emphasized in the True Pacifist Route epilogue, where Alphys preemptively responds with a joke before Sans does.[42] It is also noteworthy that if Papyrus is called just before entering the Lab, Sans appears in the call and suggests that there may be dogs inside the lab.[43] This hints that he may know about the True Lab since Endogeny, an Amalgamate composed of several dogs, can be found there. According to Alphys in an aborted Genocide Route, she is forced to rule the Underground and Sans helps her lead; she calls Sans "a good guy".[44] W. D. Gaster A few things hint at a connection between Sans and W. D. Gaster. Evidence includes the blueprints and veiled machine found in his workshop, the sprites used for his skull-like laser guns (labeled gasterblaster in the game files), and his unexplained scientific research on the "anomaly" and timelines. Sans and Papyrus are named after a font, which W. D. Gaster is assumed to also be, so it is believed they are related. ADVERTISEMENT Dialogue Sans selling Hot Dogs in Hotland (only available if Papyrus was not killed) hey buddy, what's up? wanna buy a hot dog? it's only 30G. [Yes] thanks, kid. here's your 'dog. yeah. 'dog. apostrophe-dog. it's short for hot-dog. another h'dog? here you go... whoops, i'm actually out of hot dogs. here, you can have a hot cat instead. another dog, coming right up... ... you really like hot animals, don't you? hey, i'm not judging. i'd be out of a job without folks like you. cool. here's that ''dog. apostrophe-apostrophe dog. it's short for apostrophe-dog. which is, in turn, short for... another one? okay. careful. if you eat too many hot dogs... you'll probably get huge like me. huge as in super-popular, i mean. i'm practically a hot-dog tycoon now. thanks, kid. here's your hot dog. [Full Inventory] you're holding too much. ... guess i'll just put it on your head. [Head Dogs #1] [Head Dogs #2] here's another hot dog. it's on the house. well, no. it's on you. here. have fun. [Head Dogs #3-30] [Head Dogs #31] i'll be 'frank' with you. as much as i like putting hot dogs on your head... thirty is just an excessive number. twenty-nine, now that's fine, but thirty... does it look like my arms can reach that high? sorry, thirty is the limit on head-dogs. [Head Dogs #32+] [Not enough money] whoops, you don't have enough cash. you should get a job. i've heard being a sentry pays well. yeah, you've gotta save your money for college and spiders. [No]) Undyne: Undyne is an anthropomorphic fish monster. She has blue scales and a long red ponytail. She has red and blue fins on the sides of her head, and a pair of sharp, yellow, protruding teeth. She wears a red eyeshadow and has an eyepatch over her left eye. She also wears a black tank top and blue jeans, but debuts in armor varying in light and dark shades of gray. Her eyes have black vertical pupils and yellow sclera. Undyne has no nose Whenever she persists through Determination after her HP reduces to zero, her pupils turn white, and her sclera turns black. She no longer has an eyepatch, and her newly revealed empty eye socket emits a flashing light in the shape of a spear. Her hair spikes at the ends like a trident and her fin rays become more rigid and pointy. She also appears to have donned a new set of darker colored armor with souls/hearts on her chestplate and new white gloves, which have spikes protruding from their backside, accompanied by boots with pointed toes Personality Undyne is passionate about everything that she does. She acts quickly on her ideas and is steadfast in her beliefs.[3] Though she wants to defeat the protagonist, she also tries to be fair and offers an explanation of how Green Mode works. Asgore taught her the value of pacifism,[4] which is why Undyne sees the protagonist as "a wimpy loser with a big heart." When the protagonist first encounters her, she fights to further Asgore's plan of collecting seven human SOULs but, if the protagonist shows mercy, Undyne just as quickly defends them from Asgore. She loves to help others and mentors Shyren and Papyrus in various skills. Undyne dislikes puzzles, loves japes,[5] enjoys playing the piano,[6] collecting weaponry, primarily swords,[7] and anime. The latter she shares with her romantic interest, Alphys. Since Alphys told Undyne that anime is actually human history, Undyne regards human history as exciting and cool.[8] Out of all encountered monsters, Undyne possesses the most Determination. She melts before her death, implying that her body cannot handle the amount of Determination she has. ADVERTISEMENT Main Story Neutral Route First, however, as is customary for those who make it this far... I shall tell you the tragic tale of our people. It all started, long ago... UNDYNE Frisk screenshot shadow The lighting radically changes when Undyne is near. The protagonist initially encounters Undyne after entering Waterfall, where Undyne stands on top of a ledge. If alive, Papyrus approaches her and delivers a report on the status of the human, and then attempts to convince her not to harm them. After Papyrus leaves, the protagonist can continue, but the grass rustling alerts Undyne to their presence. She scopes out the grass for a moment whilst the track Undyne plays, before retreating. Undyne follows the protagonist throughout Waterfall and repeatedly attacks them, but the protagonist always evades capture by either dodging her attacks or due to Monster Kid's interference. Later on, Undyne approaches the protagonist as Monster Kid hangs on to the side of a bridge. If the protagonist saves the Monster Kid, they protect the protagonist from Undyne. If the protagonist does not help the Monster Kid, Undyne jumps down to save them instead. Undyne takes a small amount of damage after doing this, which is useful for killing Undyne on the Neutral Route. NGAHHH!! soundtrack Undyne challenges the protagonist. After this, Undyne confronts the protagonist and stands atop a crag while giving a monologue that she has practiced many times before.[9] However, she cuts the monologue short because she forgot the rest of it[10] and launches head-on into battle. If Papyrus has been killed, Undyne is distraught and does not energetically shout at the protagonist before the battle. Spear of Justice soundtrack Battle against Undyne. After Undyne chases the protagonist into Hotland, she collapses due to dehydration. The protagonist can offer Undyne a glass of water, spill all the water in front of her, or continue into Hotland. If she receives water, Undyne stands up, looks around, and slowly returns to Waterfall. If the protagonist leaves this room before pouring the water, Undyne develops heatstroke and the protagonist cannot befriend her, thus preventing the True Pacifist Route requirements from being fulfilled. If Undyne's health reaches 0 in her battle with the protagonist during a Neutral Route, she manages to cling on to life with Determination and survives further attacks from the protagonist. The protagonist's SOUL returns to Green Mode, preventing the protagonist from fleeing. However, Undyne attacks slower each turn, and every time she attacks, more of her body begins to ripple and split apart. Eventually, after six turns, she reforms due to her Determination, causing her to have more Determination than her monster body can handle. Because of this, she melts (similar to the Amalgamates in the True Lab near the end of the True Pacifist Route) and begins to disintegrate. The protagonist is unable to end the battle by sparing her while this is happening, and whether or not they attack her has no effect on how quickly she dies. After she dies, the dialogue of the NPCs of Waterfall will change, usually talking about the change of atmosphere in the area and generally feeling unsafe. Most of the Echo Flowers will also become silent as well. True Pacifist Route Hey! Human! If you got past ME, you can do ANYTHING! So don't worry! We're with you all the way! UNDYNE Flowey screenshot captured monsters Undyne and other main characters trapped by Flowey's vines. Papyrus calls the protagonist during Undyne's chase and suggests that they and Undyne should hang out at her house. If the protagonist gives Undyne water and has no EXP, they can backtrack to her house to meet Papyrus, and begin their hangout with her. Undyne is initially hostile to the protagonist,[11] but changes her attitude when Papyrus presents befriending the human as a challenge and then escapes. She realizes that becoming "besties" with the protagonist would be "the perfect revenge," and says that the protagonist will feel "enamored" with Undyne by the end of their hangout. Undyne discusses her training with Asgore over tea and suddenly realizes that Papyrus's cooking lesson usually occurs at this time. She insists that she and the protagonist bond over cooking, which ends in Undyne's house catching on fire. Humiliated and feeling that she failed at befriending the protagonist, Undyne battles the protagonist and offers them the first hit. Regardless on whether the protagonist deals a "fake hit" through the ACT button or a real hit through the FIGHT button, they only deal one HP of damage. Undyne realizes neither of them wants to harm one another. Because her house was scorched, Undyne moves into Papyrus and Sans's House. After the protagonist completes a Neutral Route, they can backtrack from the CORE into the MTT Resort, and Undyne will call them to ask for a favor. In Snowdin Town, Undyne gives them a letter that she asks them to take to Alphys in Hotland. Th to become friend Undyne says that Alphys needs to work on her self-image,[15] and Papyrus leaves with Alphys to help with her emotional transformation. After the two leave, Undyne asks the protagonist if anime is real or not and thanks them for helping with Alphys. Later on, after Toriel's arrival, Undyne appears to interrupt Asgore's encounter with the protagonist and demands that they befriend one another. Prompted by Mettaton, Alphys and Undyne almost kiss before Flowey's ambush, but Toriel chastises them for kissing in front of a child. Flowey ensnares the protagonist's friends with a Photoshop Flowey vine, and Undyne protects them from incoming attacks from Flowey. He then absorbs the six human SOULs and most of the SOULs of the monsters in the Underground. During the battle against Asriel, Undyne appears as one of the Lost Souls. Epilogue When the protagonist talks to Undyne in the epilogue, Undyne states that she is glad that she lost to the protagonist and then resolves to watch anime with Alphys. The Royal Guard is disbanded. Toriel also texts the protagonist that Undyne was able to lift Asgore, Sans, Papyrus, Alphys, and Toriel herself at once, but was uncertain as to how to put them down. Undyne overworld epilogue On the surface, Undyne pursues Papyrus after he runs off to meet more humans. In the True Pacifist Ending Credits, Undyne kisses Alphys on her left cheek and laughs when she faints in embarrassment. She then punches the sidewalk beside her while laughing, causing it to crack. Genocide Route You're gonna have to try a little harder than THAT. UNDYNE THE UNDYING Battle Against a True Hero soundtrack Battle against Undyne the Undying. Undyne chases the protagonist throughout Waterfall. Finally reaching them, Undyne demands that they give their soul or she will forcefully take the soul from their body. Monster Kid intervenes, not understanding who she is fighting with, and is dragged away from Undyne, who tells them off screen what the human has been doing and that they must stay away. Monster Kid, disobeying, confronts the protagonist on the bridge, but is attacked by them. Undyne leaps in to protect Monster Kid at the cost of her own life, lies that she is fine, and finally makes them listen and run away home. Undyne is shocked that the human defeated her with just one hit. Blaming herself for letting everyone down, with her final dying thought being of her friends, she prevents herself turning to dust through sheer willpower, transforming instead into a new form the game calls Undyne the Undying. In this form, Undyne is empowered by the hopes and dreams of monsterkind and humanity, realising that if the human isn't stopped, their slaughter won't end with monsters. She feels that everyone's hearts are beating as one, all with one goal: to defeat the protagonist. She refers to them a final time as "human", but then amends herself to whatever the protagonist is, declaring "I, UNDYNE, will strike you down!". Undyne gains incredible strength and fully recovers with the help of her innate determination. Her attacks are harder and faster. However, the protagonist's ability to try the battle over and over guarantees their victory with enough patience and skill. Undyne, stricken down again, is surprised that even that power was not enough - but she refuses to lose hope, revealing that Alphys has been watching the fight and working to evacuate everyone if anything went wrong. She also claims that Asgore will be alerted to absorb the six human souls and fight the protagonist. Melting, but with a huge grin on her face, she dies in triumph, declaring "And with that power... This world will live on...!". After this, Undyne dies and turns to dust, never having lost her faith. ADVERTISEMENT In Battle For an in-battle description, see Undyne/In Battle. Undyne first met Alphys in the Garbage Dump while searching for swords. She listened to Alphys's theories for hours on where the Garbage Dump's abyss led. The two became close friends soon after, with Alphys introducing her to anime at some point, although Alphys told her that they were history biopics about humans. They hang out often, and Alphys uses the seagrass throughout Waterfall to make a special frosty treat for Undyne.[16] Alphys and Undyne also worked together to create some of the puzzles in Waterfall She quit her job as head of the Royal Guard at the end of the Family Ending to be Alphys's lab assistant, where she apparently caused a lot of explosions.[19] In the True Pacifist Route, Undyne calls the protagonist to have them deliver one of her letters to Alphys, but quickly changes her mind after changing into some casual clothes. She discovers them in the dump, having a pretend date due to Alphys thinking the letter was from the protagonist, where she hears Alphys saying she loves her. This leads to a conversation where Alphys confesses everything to her, which she mostly accepts, but she starts freaking out after Alphys leaves due to being told that anime is not real. She asks the protagonist if it is true, and if they confirm that it is, she becomes devastated but decides to put up a brave face for Alphys's sake. If the protagonist says that anime is real, she is elated and raves about "gigantic swords" and "magical princesses". Undyne and Alphys nearly kiss while visiting the protagonist after the Asgore fight is interrupted, but Toriel interrupts them and tells them not to kiss in front of the protagonist. Undyne is seen kissing Alphys on the cheek on the beach during the credits and laughs when the latter faints. Papyrus Papyrus, who I have trained every day... Even though I KNOW he's too goofy to ever hurt anyone... UNDYNE ABOUT PAPYRUS IF HE'S DEAD Undyne thinks of Papyrus as a close friend. She is impressed by his persistence, but is concerned about his well-being and secretly does not want him to join the Royal Guard because she believes he is too kind to even fight.[20] As a result, she teaches him how to cook in hopes for him to defer from joining. Undyne sometimes enjoys messing with Papyrus,[21] but she often forgets that he usually takes things literally.[22] She becomes heartbroken and infuriated if the protagonist kills Papyrus during a Neutral/Genocide Route. The Protagonist Now I know you aren't just some wimpy loser. You're a wimpy loser with a big heart! UNDYNE AFTER FAUX BATTLE WITH THE PROTAGONIST Undyne initially despises the protagonist and believes that they would be more useful dead than alive.[23] If the protagonist spares her and offers her water in Hotland, she begrudgingly befriends them if they have earned no EXP. Though Papyrus tricks Undyne into befriending the protagonist, she genuinely cares about them at the end of their hangout. However, if the protagonist betrays her by killing monsters after her hangout, she ends up hating them more than she would if they did not hang out with her at all.[24][25] If the protagonist earned no EXP and befriended Undyne in a previous playthrough, she remembers them vaguely as a friend but brushes off the feeling before her battle.[26] Asgore It seems that you and ASGORE are fated to fight. But knowing him... He probably doesn't want to. UNDYNE ABOUT ASGORE AFTER FAUX BATTLE WITH THE PROTAGONIST Even though Asgore is her boss, Undyne sees him as a friend and knows his favorite type of tea. When she was younger, Undyne challenged Asgore to a fight but could not land a single blow on him.[27] She was humiliated because he did not fight back and only dodged her attacks. Asgore then offered to train Undyne and eventually promoted her to head of the Royal Guard. After Toriel refuses to "be friends again" with Asgore in the True Pacifist Route, Undyne sympathizes with him.[28] Toriel Uh, yeah...? Nice to meet you! UNDYNE MEETS TORIEL Undyne first meets Toriel at the end of the Pacifist route. They both treat each other in a friendly manner and immediately find something in common between them. On Neutral routes, in endings with Toriel, their relationship can be positive or negative. If Human killed monsters, Undyne will not accept the new policy about humans and will overthrow her by sending her back to the Ruins. If Human didn't kill any monsters, Undyne will agree with her new policy and work at Toriel's new school. At the end she says that she supports her. Napstablook Napstablook and Undyne live in the same neighborhood, and Napstablook is intimidated by her.[29] She still tries to be a good neighbor to them. She seems concerned about them being alone after their cousin left and tells the protagonist to be nice to them.[30] Mettaton I don't really like that guy. But I admire his lifestyle. UNDYNE ABOUT METTATON Undyne does not know that Mettaton is Napstablook's cousin. She has a distaste for him,[31] and she does not like his show.[32] Though she does acknowledge that she "admires his lifestyle."[31] Shyren Shyren, who was just learning to sing... UNDYNE ABOUT SHYREN IF SHE'S DEAD Undyne used to give piano lessons to Shyren,[33] but one day she stopped coming – presumably after her sister fell down. Monster Kid Hurt? It's nothing. Next time, listen when I tell you to leave, okay? UNDYNE AFTER RESCUING HIM ON THE GENOCIDE ROUTE. Undyne appears to care for Monster Kid's safety. This can be seen when Undyne saves them after they fall off a cliff. This aspect appears more prominently in Genocide Route, where Undyne takes a fatal blow in their place. . and then *fanfic sypnosis:Sans was chilling at his hotdog stand it wasn’t a hotdog stand really….there was a hotdog store right next to it selling all sorts of hotdogs and it actually have customers…sans have no idea why his stand is actually popular maybe the hotdogs are much better…he shrugs it off and just laid back like usual with no care in the world well except thinking of his static state that seems more apparent as the days passed nothing stayed the same anymore ….he has nothing for himself.it turned out very clear that is he and Toriel were never friends, they bonded over back in the underground behind the door with only jokes and puns and Toriel probably was coping for her loneliness after she left Asgore and hid in ruined they didn’t even share name basis until the barrier broke….the only activities he share is when paps drag him into or go to grillby and perform puns or drink ketchup even that is impossible now…his restaurant is flourishing and the business is serious he would only be a drag if he make “tabs” and unpaid messing around the place.everything is so…new and unpredictable** * *he looks at the sky it was a beautiful clear sky a perfect weather….for a walk.* *he stood up and began to take walk…with no real destination he just walk and think* *he look at the city and the people walking in the sidewalks he just look at how everyone is doing their thing some are running to places some are shopping even monsters is in with it all…he then noticed the kids playing…he chuckled and just continued walking* *he walks and walk until something caught he attention.a park….it was a park with a big playground for children a pond with ducks….and a bench on the corner with shade* *he walked to the bench and sit down on it…he look at the pond the ducks were just swimming without a single care in the world* *some figure approached him a police woman with recentcutted short hair ..it’s non other than Undyne-sans kinda forgot that unlike the others who are busy in worldly matter Undyne is just a mere police woman* "…sup undyne" *he leaned back into the bench not looking at her and just relaxing on the bench* *Undyne sat on the bench with him crossing her arms* "….got a minute?" *sans chuckled and closed his eyes* "i got the whole day in fact." *she rolled her eyes before continuing* "…I need to ask you something…" *sans opened his eyes not that he had pupils but it was obvious he is paying attention to her* "yeah?what is it?""…why aren't you doing anything with your life?.." *she asked him bluntly he wasn't surprise she was straight the point type* *sans chuckled again and said nonchalantly* "what do you mean?i am doing something…i'm selling hotdogs" *Undyne stared at him with a surprise non angry expression for someone all into giving all out* "Aha can’t complain when all I do is doing boring paper work”"…you know what I mean…everyone is doing something.paps is a famous ambassador to monster and humans…mettaton is a famous celebrity….even Alphys is making a new revolution in tech and magic…and yet you're just sitting here selling hotdogs like nothing…" *she waved her hands until she slapped her forehead* “And I! I mean I was Undyne captain of the royal guard I mean I don’t want to brag and I just became to be a hero but to reduce to mere oolice making paper work of some sort!” *he chuckled a little and closed his eyes once more…but not because he find it amusing.it was actually out of sarcasm ….he let out sigh and reopened his eyes* "…that just how things turned out." *sans replied his usual laid back tone….it isn’t like he's annoyed but not in a good mood either.* *Undyne sighed and looked at the sky* "…really just because that's how things go…no ambitions…no purpose?" *sans closed his eyes again…she's hitting a pretty accurate nail in the head for some reason* "….i guess so…" *he answered quietly as possible …trying to avoid the topic* “You seem more troubled by this problem of being a mere police woman than my funny state though”*Undyne raised her eyebrows at his answer* "Of course I am troubled…I'm just a cop doing mere paper work…I'm not doing anything…I have no purpose" *she crossed her arms and leaned back on the bench* "but in your case…you're just selling hotdogs…doing nothing but just sleeping…are you really happy with just this?" *sans looked down…she's really pushing with the question* *sans remained quiet….she's really asking a lot of questions…and the worst part is..he didn't even know how to answer any of them* *she sighed and continued* "….don't you want something more than this?anything?" *sans kept quiet….he had no answer….he just stared at the ground in thought…* “Nah..honestly not really..are you okay though?”*she groaned in frustration of his answer* "Don’t kid yourself sans!…I am trying to get something out of you and you just answered with a shrug." *shes getting more and more frustrated* "Of course I'm not okay!i'm doing nothing in life..I'm stuck being a mere cop" *she gritted her teeth* "What worse it’s because I am a monster because humans don’t trust monsters enough..at least they could allow me guard papyrus but nooo royal figure of monsters aren’t allowed because we don’t have a ruler after king Asgore retired and now we are like…pets to them and even as a police man I can’t do a thing to monster victims because I need to file a paper and wait for who know how long until it’s too late and I can’t fight because another war…isn’t an option” *she regretfully have difficulty saying the last as much she had hatred to humans even in underground because they trapped and even after meeting frisk that proved her human can be kind it proved her they are so tough and with how sooo many humans are it’s….hopeless* *sans looked at Undyne…he never seen her this frustrated before…he never knew how much the situation affect her…* *he sighed and finally said something* "…you still hate humans huh” *she gave him a look and said sarcastically* "What gave you that idea…I freaking love it…" *sans rolled his eyes* "Yeah yeah sarcasm got it."*she sighed and looked at the ground* "…what else would I feel?i don't hate them….i hate what humans had done and is…it's just…frustrated is what I feel and it's annoying." *sans gave a small shrug but still listened* "…but look in the bright side our state is much better than how we started paps and the human (frisk) made so much far to let us settle isn’t he the coolest”*Undyne nodded, a bit of the tension leaving her shoulders* "Yeah…paps really is the coolest…and frisk…I guess She is alright." *she said, her earlier frustration fading away a bit* "But that doesn't change the fact that I'm not doing anything meaningful…how are you so calm doing nothing"*sans shrugged again, a slight smirk on his face* "Eh, I guess I'm just naturally chill" *he said, trying to play it off nonchalantly* *he used to do and continue like that for a really long time why would he change now …even if everyone changed and moved on ..or everything he used is different * *Undyne shook her head, clearly not buying his nonchalant attitude* "Don't give me that 'naturally chill' crap. You're too smart and too lazy to not have any goals or aspirations." *she said, crossing her arms again.* "You can't tell me you're content with just selling hotdogs for the rest of your life"*sans chuckled but it was almost a bit soulless* "It's not like I have anything else to do." *he said it nonchalantly, but there was a hint of something else in his voice….like he's trying to convince himself not her though later he glanced up at Undyne raised an eyebrow * “Though in your case I think your are the one needing to solve it are you okay you seem sour “*Undyne noticed his tone and rolled her eyes* "Yeah, I'm just peachy. I love being a police officer stuck with paperwork all day and not being able to use my full potential. It's just great" *she said sarcastically, her earlier frustration coming back.* *sans gave a small chuckle at her sarcasm* "Heh, you've always been impatient, maybe you key is just wait it out and let the life take it course." *he said, a hint of amusement in his voice* *he leaned back against the bench and looked up at the sky* "You know….you're not the only one frustrated." *he said, his tone a little more serious this time* *Undyne groaned and ran a hand through her hair* "Because someone have to do it?…monsters hopes and dreams are effected by it even by one of I can save what remaining in someway or sort I would do it..and who knows maybe just like you said they would let you later to do more for monsterkind sake *she said, a mix of frustration and resignation in her voice* "And it's not like I have many options. We're monsters, remember? We're lucky they even allowed us to have jobs in the first place if I quit that what the humans would want"*sans stared at her yep he don’t relate to her at all why does she even have a problem with that smirk* “Then you solved your problem why are your troubles by it then? As you said it you are Undyne the hero who never give up and that’s your solution as you said to not give up it’s just sometimes the result are very slow” *she crossed her arms and grumbled* "Bet ya I will do even more than that!” *sans chuckled at her determination* "Heh, there's the Undyne I know." *he said, a small smile on his face yep truly she is the complete opposite of him that hero* *she gave him a cocky smile* "You bet I will! I ain't gonna let stupid paperwork get the best of me!" *sans chuckled again he really wish he was as optimistic as her sometimes* "That's the spirit." *he said, genuinely happy to see a bit of her old confidence back* *she gave him a cocky smile* "You bet I will! I ain't gonna let stupid paperwork get the best of me!" *sans chuckled again he really wish he was as optimistic as her sometimes* "That's the spirit." *he said, genuinely happy to see a bit of her old confidence back* *she punched the air confidently* "I'll show 'em! I'll prove to them that a monster can do just as much as a human, if not more!" *sans leaned back on the bench, still smiling. It was nice to see her getting motivated again* "Heh, I have no doubt you will" *though it seems he will sit for a while until undyne finish her monologue sigh* *she went on for a while, rambling about her determination and how she was gonna prove her worth as a monster* *sans just listened, occasionally giving a "yeah" or "you got it" type of response.* *after a while, she seemed to run out of steam and fell silent, panting a little* "Phew, I needed that" *she said, slumping back down on the bench next to him* “Yeah clearly your welcome “ *sans laughed he would have sigh with relief though that would be rude* *she gave him a playful punch on the arm* "Heh, shut up" *she said, but there was no real bite to it* *she sat in silence for a moment before suddenly speaking up again* "Hey, you said you were frustrated too, right?"*he chuckled and rubbed his arm where she had punched him* "Yeah, I did say that" *he leaned back and looked up at the sky* "But honestly my frustrations are nothing compared to your's"m and I am okay its just a bummer that I can’t go to grillby anymore”*she looked at him with a raised eyebrow* "Wait, what do you mean you can't go to Grillby's anymore? Did something happen?"*he shrugged* "Well...it's not that I can't go to Grillby's. It's just that it's not the same anymore." *he said, his tone turning a little sadder* "After the barrier broke and the monsters were free, Grillby's has become a big deal. The place is always filled with customers and tourists now. It used to be a place where I could just relax and drink in peace." *he smirked and joked and leaned forward on the bench* “I couldn’t even build up my tabs a shame really heh”*she chuckled, shaking her head in disbelief* "Seriously? You're upset because you can't build up a tab anymore?" *he gave a sheepish grin* "Hey, a skeleton's gotta have his priorities right? Besides…a big part of the fun was seeing how much higher the tab gets before Grillby finally cuts me off.its a badge of honor” *he said with a shrug* *she rolled her eyes but smirked nonetheless* "Only you would find joy in driving poor Grillby insane with your endless tab" *she said, shaking her head in amused disbelief* *he chuckled and gave her a wink* "Yeah truly missed doing that ,he may secretly even love it for who knows what,Why else would he keep letting me rack up the tab?" *he said, shrugging with a lazy smile* *Undyne rolled her eyes again* "You're ridiculous, you know that?" *she said, but there was a hint of amusement in her voice* "You're making a big deal out of nothing. So what if you can't go to Grillby's all the time? There are other places you can hang out."*he shrugs as he slouched * "Would you look at that your right.as you said problem solved.told ya my issue isn’t as big as yours” *he said wistfully, still looking up at the sky* *she shook her head, still clearly amused by him* "Of course I'm right. I'm always right." *she said, crossing her arms* "Still….you seem pretty down about this. You miss the old Grillby's that much, huh?"*he turned his head to her hums* "hmmmis that so..what gives?”"You just seem a lot more quiet than usual, and...I don't know, maybe a little sad." *she pointed out. She was surprisingly observant of his mood.* “Is it about papyrus?”*he was actually a bit taken aback by her observation. He hadn't expected her to notice his change in mood that much.* *he shook his head, trying to shrug off her concern.* "Nah, it's not about Paps. He's fine and is doing great."*she didn't seem convinced by his response* "You sure? You usually talk about him on and on you barley never miss an opportunity to mention him” *she pointed out, her eyes narrowing in suspicion .she really paying attention.* *he rolled his eyes at her comment* "I'm not obsessed with Paps, you know." *he said, half-jokingly. he leaned back on the bench, trying to brush off her concern.* "I just like talking about him, that's all."*she raised an eyebrow, still not buying his excuse* "Uh-huh. Sure, you're not obsessed. You just happen to talk about him every chance you get." *she smirked, enjoying teasing him a bit.* “Wow look at him isn’t he the coolest?,my brother this my brother that even back in the underground where he was….mo offense a weirdo”*he gave her a mock offended look* "Hey, don't call Paps a weirdo. He's just....unique." *he said, crossing his arms. He knew she was teasing him, but he couldn't help but defend his brother* “Sarcasm isn’t funny you know?”*she couldn't help but laugh at his reaction* "Aw, come on, I'm just messing with you." *she grinned and bumped her shoulder against the bench handle* "Besides, you know I think Papyrus is cool too he is my best friend."*he chuckled and shook his head* "Yeah, I know you're just giving me a hard time. But seriously, Paps is pretty great." *he agreed. He knew that Undyne genuinely liked Papyrus, she was like a sister to him after all if she wasn’t he would let paps share a breath with his brother* *she nodded in agreement* "He is. He's always so positive and full of energy. It's impossible to not like him." *she leaned back on the bench, a small smile on her face* "It's hard to believe he's the same bonehead who is the peace representative between humans and monsters” *he chuckled at the memory* "Yeah, he's come a long way. Who would have thought that the guy who couldn't even catch a human would end up representing monsters and humans?" *he shook his head in amusement. Papyrus had definitely grown…..so so much *
